Default 9500ci update firmware or not?

Not sure how I went so many years without finding this forum! I have a 9500ci that is about 6 years old. The receiver was sent back once when it was about two years old as it stopped working completely. Works like a charm, range is good, BSM alerts can get a bit much to handle in traffic. I have never updated the firmware ever! Is it worth messing with it? I have a StiR+ that was also several years old worked perfect, I updated the firmware last year and ever since it has had that all too common check wiring error, sent it back to bel and it still does it from time to time.
Any benefits that might outweigh the risks? I know I can segment it if I do but I haven't ever noticed a difference between it and my segmented Stir+

If you don't have the ability to turn of rdr and select individual segments of the Ka band then yes you really need to update. By disabling Ka superwide, enabling only the Ka segments you need, and turning rdr off; you increase your performance on Ka by a huge margin. Well worth it.

Smokinu454, thanks for the input. I agree those options would be a huge improvement, but if its at a high risk of dealing with the check wiring fault many have dealt with I rather not go through that hassle.

I've updated mine once successfully but I wouldn't do it again.

For some reason after I updated my GPS no longer would connect.

I wound up sending it back to Escort and they sent out a new antenna which did work.

May have been a coincidence but I decided not to do it again.

The update wasn't a smooth process at all, and I had to do it several times before it actually worked.

I don't segment Ka though so I don't really care about that. If that's important to you then I would say give it a shot... just make sure you have Escort support ready in case something goes wrong.

Exactly my fear! I know 3 people personally that all had issues requiring service on 9500/Stir+ that are part of a local exotic car club. All 3 had never had an issue prior to updating and one ended up junking his Stir+ after sending it back twice, having the entire system rewired (not cheap) and still getting a check wiring warning frequently.
I am going to leave it alone I think, hopefully I will get some sound clarification on Escorts thoughts on the Dragon guns and can get a Max CI 360 ordered soon.

I guess I am the odd ball. I updated mine multiple times and never had an issue.

So asking this: What were the differences between your successful updates, vs those who had unsuccessful results?

May I ask that everyone in this thread share these details?
  • What OS (Windows, Mac)
  • What OS version?
  • What Device?

The devil is in the details, so I'd like everyone in this thread to say more.

Well, I have not updated my 9500ci ever. I may see a couple of guys with issues at pre Fathers day get together and will be sure to ask.

I started out trying to use a windows 7 laptop but it would never recognize the system.

Then I actually went to an old laptop I had that had windows XP and it worked, but it was very touch and go.

Meaning it would recognize it, then not recognize it, then recognize it.

I spent time on the phone with the techs configuring ports and it was a very large pain.

I got it to work, but after that I left it alone.
