Default 9500ix won't communicate with Escort Live

I thought that I would make this private response public to see if any other frustrated souls are having similar problems.

I just purchased a 9500ix directly from Escort Radar (Ref: Order Number S00002680057) and I have the same problem (won't handshake with Escort Live).

The 9500ix (SN 35018311 3714) replaced another 9500ix that I had purchased from Costco. It bricked during update with Defender Tools, and after consulting with your tech I was advised to return it to Cosco for credit. I have a SmartCord Live DW iPhone version installed in my 2014 Lincoln MKT and I'm running Escort Live on my iPhone 5 running iOS 8.1.1. It seems to connect just fine via bluetooth as connection status on iPhone shows "connected" and the light on the SmartCord DW turns blue, indicating proper bluetooth connection.

Everytime I launch Escort Live on the iPhone, I get a message that the detector requires a firmware update. The only option available on the app popup message is to select "OK". At that time the app prompts me for the first two digits of the detector serial number. After input of (in my case) "3' then "5" it returns a message that I need to update my firmware through Defender tools.

I just received the 9500ix last Thursday and upon receiving it I hooked it up to Defender Tools via a USB data cable (only) to update the firmware and then my second step was to merge the databases. These processes both executed without any problems and after setting my preferences through Defender Tools, I installed the detector in the car.

It seems to function properly by displaying the GPS speed (my preference), a good and constant GPS icon and it has notified and sounded a visually verified "Ka" threat. It does not seem to be communicating with Escort Live as it should however.

I also have an 8500 X50 installed in my 2011 Honda Ridgeline that was modified and tuned up by Escort about two months ago. I have a SmartCord Live Dual plug-in adapter installed with it and Escort Live is functioning flawlessly with the setup in my Ridgeline.

What in the heck is happening with the 9500ix installed in my Lincoln? Why won't it communicate properly with Escort Live?

After reading numerous posts on this forum, I'm beginning to believe that Escort Live is flawed. If this is the case, I'm going to become quite furious because of the money that I have spent on your company's products and the frustration of having purchased not one, but two defective 9500ix radar detectors. In addition, I invested several hours to do a clean and proper permanent installation of the of the SmartCord DW in my Lincoln.

What should be my next step Escort?

I've been using Escort Live with my iPhones (originally an iPhone 5 and now an iPhone 6) for more than three years, and with both coiled and DW versions of the EL Smartcords, using a 9500ix, a Max and a Max 2.

I have no issues at all.

Four questions:
  • Which iPhone model are you using?
  • Which iOS version is installed?
  • Have you paired with any other devices using your iPhone? If so, what?
  • Does your Lincoln have any built-in Bluetooth-enabled technologies?

I'll offer these steps to help troubleshoot your issues
  1. On your iPhone, delete ("Forget") any current BT pairing, whether you are connected with them or not.
  2. Turn off BT on your iPhone, and then turn it on again. This puts your iPhone in "Discovery" mode.
  3. Start your vehicle so that the BT module on the DW SmartCord also enters "Discovery" mode.
  4. Wait about 20-30 seconds
  5. You should see the DW SmartCord "announce" itself as an available BT connection. When it does, select it.

From this point, you should be able to tie into your 9500ix. You can also now "Add-back" any of the other previously paired BT devices.

If this doesn't work, then I suspect that your EL DW BT module has failed (or is defective).
Good luck!

Angry Problems with 9500ix and Escort Live

Reference my previous post. I have since uninstalled EL from my iPhone and reinstalled it (ver. 2.1.6., the same as I had before). Same firmware update message, same results, and still no connectivity of the 9500ix.

Additional Info:
Cellular carrier - AT&T
Detector Tools - installed on a Toshiba PC laptop (ver. 1.11.36)
9500ix updated using Detector Tools on Thursday, 11-Dec-2014 (two days ago)
Phone is not "timing out" and screen is not going blank.
EL ver. 2.1.6
Again, it works just fine with my 8500 X50

Becoming very PO'd!

Have you tried updating the firmware on the EL DW SmartCord's BT module? You'll find a small USB port on the back. Connect to it using Escort's Detector Tools and update its firmware ("Software") in the tool itself.

And try to be a little bit calmer. I understand that you're feeling frustrated. All of us here are trying to help. I'm not an Escort employee, but I am a user who has a lot of experience with a 9500ix using the EL SmartCords and Escort Live with an iPhone.

Kindly consider trying my previous suggestions after you've updated the firmware on the EL DW module. There are no short-cuts when people are trying to help trouble-shoot.

Judging by your username, I'm guessing that you're a pilot. I'm a skydiver (with well more than 1,000 jumps). As such, I've watched many pilots do their pre-flight checks. The pre-flight checks are meticulous and necessary for everyone's safety.

Please do follow my suggestions, as I've tried to outline. You wouldn't "skip" checking the fuel during a pre-flight check, would you?

Four questions:

Which iPhone model are you using?

AT&T iPhone 5 model MD640LL/A (32 GB)

Which iOS version is installed?

Version 8.1.1 (12B435)

Have you paired with any other devices using your iPhone? If so, what?

WHILE IN LINCOLN:
My Lincoln Touch (SYNC system)
Escort SmartCord DW

WHILE IN HONDA
Honda Ridgeline HandsFreeLink
Escort SmartCord Live (plug-in)

Does your Lincoln have any built-in Bluetooth-enabled technologies?

See Above

I'll offer these steps to help troubleshoot your issues

On your iPhone, delete ("Forget") any current BT pairing, whether you are connected with them or not.
Turn off BT on your iPhone, and then turn it on again. This puts your iPhone in "Discovery" mode.
Start your vehicle so that the BT module on the DW SmartCord also enters "Discovery" mode.
Wait about 20-30 seconds
You should see the DW SmartCord "announce" itself as an available BT connection. When it does, select it.

Did this all last night. Did it again today.

I'm a semi-retired Aeronautical Engineer, so my troubleshooting skills are pretty well honed.

I swapped the 8500 X50 into the Lincoln using the installed SmartCord DW and then I went for a little drive looking for a local LEO. I found one and Escort Live (EL) worked just fine with the 8500 X50 and the SmartCord DW (good bluetooth connectivity, light was blue on the SmartCord DW and bluetooth status for the Smartcord DW showing "connected" on the iPhone. "Ka" band radar detected by the 8500 X50 showed up in EL.

I put the 9500ix into the Ridgeline using the plug-in SmartCord Live adapter that was originally hooked up to the 8500 X50. When I launched Escort Live, it DID NOT prompt me to update the firmware. I went for another drive in the Ridgeline looking for a local LEO. Finally found one and the detector (9500ix) showed a "Ka" band alert on the LED but not on EL.

Both detectors back to their original places and the 8500 X50 works just fine with EL in the Honda.

EL is once again trying to perform a firmware update in the Lincoln and then failing as it did before. Here's the message displayed:

Unable to Update
Escort Live is unable to update the firmware for the Passport 9500ix Red. Please connect the Passport 9500ix Red to your computer, and update the firmware using Escort Detector Tools

New Serial# / OK

NOTE: Firmware update using Detector Tools was just performed less than two days ago.

OBSERVATIONS:
1. iPhone is OK
2. Escort Live is functioning OK on the iPhone
3. SmartCord DW installed in Lincoln functions properly with the 8500 X50
4. No bluetooth connectivity problems or interferrence
5. 9500ix will not handshake with either of the SmartCord bluetooth devices.

CONCLUSION:
I now own a second defective Escort Passport 9500ix radar detector.

Escort, I hope you have personnel that monitor this forum on the weekends, because you're going to get an ear-full from me come Monday, because I'm not at all happy!!! I've wasted many hours trying to install, not one, but two 9500ix detectors in my new car and I still don't have one that functions properly! Perhaps an upgrade to one of those fancy "Texas" Max 2's would be in order to turn around my negative attitude that I have now towards your products.

TBNTX, thank you for your interest, input and help on this issue. I have read many of your posts and you seem very knowledgeable. Any other suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated and respected. By the way, I can tell from your moniker that you must be from the Lone Star State. I'm in the greater San Antonio area, how about you?

Default Update to the SmartCord DW

TBNTX,

I guess that I didn't mention that I did perform an update on the SmartCord DW (installed in the Lincoln) when I first started troubleshooting this problem. Yes, I did hook up to the little USB port on the unit with my laptop and a strong 5 Ghz WiFi signal from my wireless router. It did take a three-step update. I don't believe that any new software would have been pushed out for this device within the last day or two. Keep in mind that it functioned just fine with my 8500 X50 hooked up to it.

I will follow your advice and attempt to update it again.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,
S. B. Bennett (aka turboporopdude)

P.S. Yes, I'm also a pilot and I don't jump out of "perfectly good" aircraft! I've dropped many jumpers from helicopters when I was in the Army many years ago, and since from fixed-wing aircraft like Cessna 208's.

Thanks very much for the detailed update. Based on your comments, I don't believe that it's a 9500ix issue, since it works fine in your Ridge Line. I'm suspecting the DW BT module itself. That seems to me to be the shared factor.

Regarding my moniker. I lived in Austin for about 11 years (1996 - 2007), and I dedicated four years on the Leander, TX, city council. Now, Leander is a desirable suburb of Austin! Unfortunately, family matters took precedence. I'm presently in Topeka, KS, working remotely for a little Texas computer company headquartered in Round Rock. I so very much want to get back "home" to the Lone Star state one day.

My suggestion would be for you to PM Larry Clark (EscortRadar on this forum) about your circumstances. Larry has always been a stalwart friend of all of us forum members. If you haven't been in touch with him yet, please send him a PM and ask him to look at this thread.

Best wishes!

TBNTX,

9500ix did not perform just fine in the Ridgeline. Please read what I said more closely. 9500ix would not "handshake" with either of the SmartCord bluetooth modules whereas the 8500 X50 communicates with both of them just fine. Unless you're seeing something that I don't see, the 9500ix is defective because it won't communicate with either the wired (DW) device nor would it communicate with the cigarette lighter plug-in SmartCord Live device that's in the Honda.

By the way, one other pertinent piece of information - the Toshiba laptop on which Defender Tools is installed, is running Windows 7 Professional for an operating system.

Hope ya'll make it back to TX soon!

Regards,
S. B. Bennett (aka turbopropdude)

I'll certainly go back and re-read things. I might have missed some of the important talking points.

Offering a suggestion: I own a fully-working 9500ix, meaning that I can tie-into both of my EL SmartCords.

What would you think if I were to send you mine, and you send me yours? If you experience the same behavior with mine, then it's reasonable to eliminate any questions about your 9500ix. And if I can replicate the problem here, using my set-up, then it's proof-positive, wouldn't you think?

It doesn't cost a lot to mail things!

And thanks! I want to get back to Texas. That's "home" to me.

I too have had a lot of problems with my Max and Escort Live and I have a android phone...never had any issues with the 9500IX and my Redline...only the Max... and I have three of them in each of three cars I have... along with 3 DW Smartcords...same issue with all Max's in all three cars...I uninstalled DT and reinstalled...went to DT and updated all 3 DW cords in advanced tab...also Max updated all in advanced tab...wouldn't hurt to uninstall Live App. and reinstall...unpair bluetooth connection to phone and pair again...also too if u switch to your 8500 to your 9500 without shutting everything off including your ignition first... it doesn't want to unitlize at all in my experience...right now the Max seems to be pairing a lot better...every once in awhile I might have to try a couple of times to get it to connect...again it seems to work better shutting everything off when trying again to connect...Good luck!!!
