Default put the 9500ci in "USB mode" ??? HOW?

New user on first update. The download instructions for the database merge have a very arch warning in red to the effect to "be sure you have the 9500ci in USB mode before connecting to your computer"

Nowhere do I find any instructions on how to place the device in "USB mode" and the download instructions offer only to call the customer service number, but it's Friday evening!!

The instructions outlined in several posts here suggest just connecting my computer, but if it needs to be in "USB mode," then I need to know how to get there! Any help much appreciated!

I just connect my 9500ci to the computer, then turn the car on and it goes into USB mode automatically.

sounds good to me! that's what it sounds like the procedure should be from all I could find on this forum.....I don't know why they put that red ink warning on the download site about being sure your unit was in "USB mode" BEFORE connecting it to your computer!!! I couldn't see how you were supposed to get it in USB mode, since no setting for that is described!!

I will try exactly what you suggest; thanks!

For updating and merging the Defender database, as long as Detector Tools identifies your connected 9500ci then you can go ahead with the database merge. You can verifiy this at the top of the Detector Tools application. It should say "9500ci connected" and show the serial number.

Thanks for that clarification. In fact that is what I saw, but I never saw any indication on the unit itself that it was in "USB mode." In fact, the display went dark about the same instant that the software announced the connection and displayed the serial #.

The database merge went fine, and the software told me the firmware update was "older" than what I had, so I declined it (see my other post).

For the comfort of newbies, you might want to edit those first time instructions on the download page to either remove reference to "USB mode" or explain it a little better. I still really don't know what the heck you're referring to!!

Thank you for the suggestions. We will be making some positive changes very soon to the download and update processes.
