Hello all,
I own a couple of these older Passport 5000. I really like them however the displays die or loose segments after years of use. The display board is a simple plug in, just like a memory chip for a computer. I was at a Ham Radio Flea market and found a box of junk detectors some of which where 5000's. For a couple bucks I bought a couple both with good displays and swapped them out on my working detectors. Well it's been a few years and one of them is loosing segments. I was curious if any Techs might reveal what the problem on the board might be for the displays that just go dead. I am a tech myself and would like to repair some of my older displays. I also would like to know if their is a mod to offer a louder beeping alarm notification. I have 2 of these 5000's and one is much louder than the other. Basically, anyone get in and do some repairs or hacks their 5000? It's not worth sending in for repair due to the age but worth repairing myself. Thanks Ken |

Hey, for their time, they were neat. Their X and K band detection is right on par with the original Passport. But be careful, their Ka band detection is nowhere near any decent detector today. It's pretty atrocious.

We wouldn't repair the LCD display itself, just replace it. We haven't serviced the 5000 model for quite some time so we don't have any parts available for them.
