Default cutting a window in metal grille for 9500ci Shifters

Hi I'm a newbie member and Escort owner about to install my 9500ci in a 2012 Jaguar XJL.
Luckily I read in this forum about not installing behind the metal grille so I'm thinking that I can cut openings in my lower grille and mount the shifters, and the radar receiver flush in the openings.
Is this a good idea? Is the 9500ci still an effective unit?

It really depends on where you live and if you face K band radar or not. If your say in California you possibly could turn K band off. If you must keep K band on you will be in for mucho false K alerts. The 9500ci is outdated in that it has no filtering for BSM and CAS systems on newer cars. Escorts newer models have what is called IVT filtering that handles the majority of these false K band signals.

As far as cutting into your car, i would research that before you gave that a try. You might actually find a local Escort dealership that does the custom installed systems. They would be able to describe where and how they would do it.

I'm in Northern NY. Dono what they are using here.

I just uploaded an image to my profile that shows the bottom grille and how and where I would cut it to place the receivers. They are the orange rectangles. I will buy a low cost used bottom grille to cut the openings in. As long as the face of the receivers are clear unobstructed they should work fine. Am I correct there? The locations are fairly close to the locations shown in the instructions. Not sure about the height though. The nearest dealer is about an hour away and it's winter here.

PS. If the 9500ci is out of date for Laser jamming, is it a wasted effort to use the shifters at all? Does the radar receiver need to be unobstructed?

I visited an Escort installer today and was very impressed with his knowledge and will have my 9500ci installed there. Nobody here seemed to know that the lower grille should be cut and he will cut it to open up an area to let the shifters work as intended. He also said the 9500ci is still a valuable unit and is well worth installing.

Hope this helps somebody else here.
