Default How to Force a Self Cal

My 8500 X50 S7 is starting to show Service Required. Called Escort and they say they no longer service this version, so I am trying to see if I can get it working on a test bench.

Does anyone know how to force it to do a self cal?

Does anyone know exactly what self cal checks? Is it possible to fail self cal for some bands and have other bands still work? For example, could turning off X band get rid of the service required message and would K and Ka still work properly?

Is there info out there that discusses how to repair one of these? I've read about replacing caps and tightening the screws on the S7 antenna, but that is all I have found.

No need to tell me I should just buy a new detector. I am already shopping for one.

Every time you turn on the detector, it performs a self-calibration. If you're seeing the message "service required" message, the detector is indicating that it needs service.

I'm surprised that Escort isn't servicing these any longer. That doesn't sound right to me. You may have some incorrect information.

PM EscortRadar and explain your situation. He can answer definitively.

BTW, your detector has trade-in value if you want to get a new Escort. Look here.

Kind regards!

We stopped servicing the 8500 S7 years ago and the X50 S7 early this year.

It is not user serviceable.

Do you know exactly what self cal checks? Does it test each band, or does it test each band that is turned on and skip bands that are turned off?

Is it possible to fail self cal for some bands and have other bands still work? For example, could turning off X band get rid of the service required message and would K and Ka still work properly?

Hit it with a K or Ka band gun and you'll know for sure. I had an old RX65 S7, similar to what you have, and it stopped working on lidar, BUT X, K and Ka still worked fine. ON start it would give an error, BUT that did not stop the unit from working on other bands.

I tightened all of the screws holding the two halves of the S7 antenna together and the problem appears to have gone away. I ran it on my test bench for several days and have driven around with it for several hours. No Service Required message.

The screws did not seem very loose - I could only turn them a little. They are small and you can only apply a little torque.

I am wondering if I should put locktite on the threads?

If tightening the screws ended the "Service Required" warnings, I hope that's so. But that particular error message indicates something is going wrong with the detector's electronics, and no degree of screw-tightening will fix the electronics.

Keep an eye on things, and if the error returns, it might be time to get a new detector with improved features.
