Unhappy After 1 Year of Use - 9500ix

Overall, I have been satisfied with the 9500. Sometimes I miss the arrows that come with the Valentine, although this is only a minor inconvenience. I had been free of traffic citations while using the Escort until recently when I was nailed by a laser. My detector didn't alarm throughout the whole incident. After a little research, I affirmed a few important concepts:
- An increasing number of local jurisdictions from across the nation are using lasers (instead of radar)
- Officers on motorcycles often use laser
- In some states (including Florida), radar is more common among the highway patrol, while laser is about 50:50 in local/city jurisdictions.
- the beam produced by most radar guns is very narrow (a few inches) with very little "scatter." Since detectors are designed to alarm when exposed to scatter, lasers often do NOT trigger detector alarms.
- As many others in this forum have pointed-out, the value of a laser alarm is to notify the driver that he was just hit with a laser gun. Some call this a "ticket detector" instead of a "laser detector" because once the alarm is triggered it is too late to change driving characteristics.
- Failing to recognize that all radar detectors on the U.S. market give little or no advance notice to the driver about laser guns may result in a false sense of confidence (and this could mean a natural tendency to drive way above the speed limit, leaving you quite surprised when you see the flashing lights in your rearview mirror).
-if you want to defend yourself against a laser, get a laser jammer.

Glad to hear that you are satisfied with the 9500ix. Your observations about laser are correct. You are also correct that the only real defense against laser is a laser jammer, such as our ZR4 which integrates controls and displays with our windshield mounted detectors.

It only took one laser ticket before I went the way of a laser jammer.

I am sure it will earn it's keep......... and we will both become very good friends .........
