Size and cost. To use LNAs to cover all radar bands would require using a design similar to our M3 antenna, two horns without threat direction arrows. Current LNA technology cannot handle the bandwidth required to detect X, K and Kas so you must use multiple LNAs in order to cover all radar bands as we do in the M3 (RedLine, 9500ci). There are threats on all radar bands so we will not make the sacrifice required when using a single LNA/horn.

Is a LNA even needed in a digital setup assuming enough resolution?

Yes, I can confirm this in terms of what is available in the way of LNAs from a variety of manufacturers. LNAs which could potentially cover everything from X band to the high end of Ka band simply do not exist at the present time.

And yes, many on another forum confirm that X band is still actively used by numerous local police departments across the country.

Interesting question. The short answer is yes, if your goal is increased sensitivity, regardless of any separate digital signal processing setup outside of the radar detector's LO chamber.
