Unhappy My Escort 9500ci Update Nightmare

Iíd like to first start out by saying that before I bought my 9500ci that I was one of the biggest Escort supporters around anywhere. However, with this most recent bad experience, along with many other issues that Iíve had with our 9500ci, and now I doubt that Iíll ever buy another Escort product again. For such a pricey piece of electronics it has been nothing but one headache after another. Headaches that a (supposed) high end piece of electronics such as this should not be having. Here is our most recent headacheÖ Itís been a while since Iíve been able to update our 9500ci, so now that I have a new laptop it was literally the first thing that I wanted to do. I downloaded all of the update programs onto the laptop and began to run them. Please keep in mind that the installation for this particular 9500ci installation is VERY much customized, so it is very hard to press the power button on the top of the control unit, but after dismantling a large portion of my dash to gain access to the power button I began the update procedure. At first it wouldnít start, but on the third try it started to update the 9500ci. I was excited to have the 9500ci installed with the latest updates. But then I noticed that the update was stuck at around 15%. I patiently waited just incase something was going on in the background but the display wasnít being refreshed. However after an hour of this nonsense I started to make some phone calls. Everyone that I talked to said that it definitely shouldnít be taking over an hour to update, let alone get past 15%. I also noticed that the display was no longer lit up. I got my meter and checked voltages to the 9500ci but they looked fine. So now I basically had a 9500ci with a dead display stuck at 15% update. I checked everything that I could but everything (installation wise) looked fine. So the only thing left to do was to try to reset everything and start all over again. Nothing seems to work. The display will not light up and it will not start the update procedure again. So is there something Iím missing? Pressing a combination of buttons maybe to get it to power on again? I sincerely dread having to send this in if thatís the only solution Could I maybe just send in the display and the control interface, since those would be the two most likely culprits? Iím at a loss hereÖ.

Just a shot in the dark but have you tried disconnecting all the power and reconnecting?

Disconnecting the power isn't going to help you. If a CI has failed to complete its update, which by your description it has, then you need to put the unit into bootloader mode and try again.

Best advice is to email EscortRadar and he'll give you the specifics on how to do that.

lol, well if you cant tell us how to do it he might as well try the power just in case it works. I have never seen it not turn on because of a partial update, just not working correctly or a loss of detection.

Disconnected power and waited around a minute before reconnecting.

Speaker made a crackling noise so I know it's getting power, but the display still won't light up

It should be recoverable. Just follow the same instructions that you get when you first updated the software.

Be sure that there is no power to the 9500ci (vehicle ignition off). Now hold down both the MUTE and PWR buttons and apply power to the system (vehicle ignition on or ACC mode depending on the installation and vehicle). Continue to hold the buttons down until you see the back lights on the buttons light up. This may take 5-10 seconds. If you haven't already then connect the system to your PC's USB port and open Detector Tools and update the software again.

Well there's good news and there's bad news...

Good news - it seems to have gone through all 5 steps of updating, and the controller is lighting up.

Bad news - the display still won't come on and the database wouldn't update.

Also, it says it can't find the S/N but the S/N is clearly displayed in the upper right hand corner and it says Connected, so I'm not sure which is correct.

Reboot the 9500ci. Close and open Detector Tools again and see if it recognizes the serial number. If not then try updating it again and be sure to follow the PWR + MUTE button instructions each time.
