No matter how many times this subject comes up I have to smile. I used to sell all brands of RD's years ago and would always get the Laser question. My response was always the same. If you get a direct Laser/LIDAR hit the RD unit just told you that you just got caught. I don't know anyone or heard of anyone that moves faster than the speed of light. Anytime I get a LIDAR alert/hit I get that sick feeling!!!

This is one of the reasons why I returned my radar detector. If they don't help with laser which I see in Pennsylvania on a regular basis, I have a hard time spending money for just radar. I usually don't speed and would use a radar detector as extra protection. I find an app helpful with police ahead warnings on major highways.

If someone could convince me otherwise that the detector is worth it, I am open to listen.

If you typically drive the limit, then you don't really need a RD. I do quite a bit of highway driving, running down the East Coast (Rt 90, 81, etc) from MD to NY and from MD to GA, FL, LA. On these routes I am typically 10 - 20 over the limit. Radar is key for me because of its wide beam angle characteristic. Majority of the time, when I do not see LEO directly, I depend on the signal spread to adjust my speed. If I do this without the advanced warning, I would be toast. To me, it is simply a device giving me warning ahead of impending LEO, and works very well for my driving style. To avoid laser, I just drive smarter.

Laser is completely different then radar. It's a pulse of light that is very very narrow. At say 800 feet a laser shot is maybe 18 inches in diameter. A radar signal at that distance is say 200 yards wide. There are times if the officer aims low with the laser gun, your detector is mounted high, and you are closer then 700 feet a detector won't even make a sound. It can't even see the shot. That's what makes laser so lethal. Its always instant on and pinpoint.
