I had written a letter to CM inquiring if they planned on developing a detector with Ka coverage and they had responded that it was not a significant threat.

At the time it probably wasn't but who would put money down on a cutting edge detector that wouldn't detect (everything). By 1997 Ka was in full swing though.

When CM filed bankruptcy the VP of operations (Craig Blair), along with an investor out of Chicago, bought out the patents and trademarks and formed Escort Inc. There were quite a few marginal products in the early going, but when they bought out Beltronics in 1999 they used Bel's technology to introduce the 1st serious RD since the DSP......the Passport 8500 (released in 2002).

And in 2005 they rolled out the marvelous M3 in their Beltronics Product line in the STI Driver and STi-R. The ironic thing about that was that the M3 was engineered on Escort's side of the house.

The rest is history you likely already know.
"Marginal" LOL

The cordless Solo 5110 (aka Mini Solo) is why Escort Inc was able to purchase Beltronics. It was our most popular detector at that time.

Any chance the text of those old advertisements is on-line somewhere? I remember subscribing to Car and Driver and always reading those Escort ads. Be a walk down memory lane if I could read them once again.

Thank you Larry for the great post. After just upgrading from a Solo S2 to a Max 360 (I think I have jet lag from that move) I had been thinking about the Escort detectors I have had since my first (the original Escort!) and how neat it would be to see the older ones again. Thanks again!

To this day I still miss my old Escort DSP, only X and K band but had metal case, goofy unlock key, and one day picked up a stopped cop almost 10 miles out on straight level hwy. No detector I ever used has ever beat the incredible range it had.
