Default Why upgrade a Solo S2

I am not an informed radar detector user despite trying! I have been cruising this site to see why I should upgrade from a Solo S2 to a Solo S4 and cannot find convincing evidence that I can understand.

Is there a simple explanation for why the S4 is worth the upgrade?

Based upon the Forum posts below, the primary difference between the S2 & S4 appears to be the evolution in the cases and displays.

Post #10 below talks about the differences between S2 & S3

To be honest the Solo S4 is kind of a let down to me. New case and display, same interior guts. I was expecting IVT filtering, USB port for updates, a bump in KA performance, and maybe even BS. I guess it has none of that.

I was thinking the same thing that the S4 is not impressive. I think the snarky line about cordless phones made elsewhere by Escort is disingenuous too. Think of how much phones have advanced in the same amount of time cordless radar detectors have been around and the Escort product is basically the same as those early models. Escort is certainly not delivering the same level of innovation as the mobile phone or cordless phone industries. It is problematic that they claim low-tech or inexperienced people are the target audience too.

I used an S3 for a couple years for the rental car and multi-car experience. It sort of worked well enough if I was not the only car on the road but if I found myself on a stretch of highway 10 mph over the limit and the lead car or only car it would have been a ticket for sure as there was never enough warning to slow down in time. I am a fan of knowing there is radar in the area so in some ways the S4 at a premium price for awareness only fits for this weak definition of usefulness. But lets be honest, I used that S3 for way longer than I should have to try to get my money out of it. It did not provide nearly enough value for the convenience factor. I could have just driven the speed limit and the value of time I lost in travel would have barely scratched the surface of the price tag.

In a round about way, Escort thinks I am a idiot user for purchasing the Solo and I kind of think I am too for falling for the hype or hope of a cordless detector. The Solo barely works as a sufficient detector with a lot of limitations for today's road environment and no radar advancements that justify the cost.

I use a Max 2 now and formerly used a Valentine One. I am happy with the Max 2. The Max line of detectors is where innovation is developing nicely. The solo is past its prime if it ever had one.

I don't see the Point of a cordless to detector. The range is inferior to a corded detector and I don't see a problem with someone having to pack a radar detector that has a cord if traveling a lot. Just doesn't make sense. I guess it's all marketing hype

I am disappointed as well- no boost to Ka range.

Does the battery last longer on the S4. I don't have others to compare but I tested one out and the battery lasted forever!!

I thjnk those that are disappointed is because this is probably not the detector for you. It is made primarily for a traveling person that may fly frequently and use rental cars and that kind of thing. You stick it on the WS and no worrying about cords etc and it's ready to go. The battery would last a person probably an entire trip maybe a couple of weeks or more. Like I said I don't know how the old solos were because I don't have a comparison but I was pretty impressed with the batteries especially.

I just don't see it. You have to carry a RD with you in either case, you just have to carry a power cord instead now without the battery. The way the power cord is clipped into the units it is not easy to forget it. Given the superior range the powered RD's have over the solo I can't see why anyone would purchase one. I am honestly amazed there is a strong enough market to keep producing/updating these. If the police always used C/O I could maybe see it but with all the I/O shots out there you want range to see ahead of you as much as you can! I guess it must be a great seller or Escort would not have invested the R&D into a new unit.

Yea I dunno. I guess there's a block of folks out there that still like it and purchase or like you said there wouldn't be demand enough for it to keep.

I understand what your saying and the new Solo will be a top seller I'm sure. I guess i I expected at a minimum for it to have a new processor, usb port, and IVT filtering. And if they saw fit even a BS option for KA. I guess not lol.
