Return it. I used to work with Best Buy until March this year, and they're not supposed to put a previously-purchased detector back into inventory. They are supposed to "PRC" it. In short, you purchased a used detector. Was it sold as an "open box" item?

Advise them that this unit was previously-registered, and that you are unable to register it with Escort.

The detector didn't say it was used it was displayed as if it was brand new. In plastic shrink wrap behind the glass case.

Exchange or return it.

Many stores have shrink wrap machines in the backroom.

Just returned the X80. I asked them maybe it was miss marked as new instead of an open box and they said there weren't allowed to sell returned radar detectors. Interesting. Also, unfortunately they didn't have anymore so I will have to get another one somewhere else.

Thank you for all the help and troubleshooting!

Ditto what Flylow5f39 said. And as a former BBY employee, my store had a shrink-wrap machine, too.

Further to this, purchases that I've made directly from Escort in recent years weren't shrink-wrapped.

In short, if you tried to register the detector and you received a message that the serial number had already been registered, you bought a "previously purchased" detector. Sorry for the hassle, FineVisionz, but that's the honest truth.

If you want to be absolutely sure that you're buying a brand new X80, purchase it from Escort directly.

That's interesting. I say this because they have 3 Max360's and all were in shrink wrap. All where packaged like this X70 from best buy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld66upKWGQc

Perhaps Escort shrink-wraps products for resellers, or perhaps Best Buy does it. I don't know. But I stand by my last comment: if you want to know that you are getting a brand-new detector, buy it from Escort directly.

To be sure, I don't know what happened in our situation. I'm not knocking BBY, and I suppose someone made a mistake by taking a return and putting it back into inventory. But as a former employee at BBY, I do know what is supposed to be done. Sometimes, though, mistakes happen.

In the end, there's no possible way that you would have gotten the "serial number has been previously registered" notice if someone hadn't already registered the detector with Escort.

I will definitely go that route next time, thank you for all the help, TBNTX. I appreciate it!
