Original Passport 8500 detectors requiring internal or T2 repairs will be charged a flat fee of $139.95 or you can trade it in toward a new model or purchase a refurbished unit from our e-Bay store for $129.95.

SmartCord Live repairs are a flat fee of $19.95.
Yikes!

Common Problems:

Broken 9500ix case. The screw bosses crack and the case comes apart. Root cause....thin screw bosses / poor design. We pay $40 to replace a poorly designed case with another that is just as likely to break?

Blown Speakers (9500ix, RedLine, GX65, etc.....etc.....) are VERY common failures. Root cause......cheap speakers. We pay $100 to replace a cheap low quality speaker with another cheap low quality speaker?

Service Required / No Detection / Error message (RedLine). Root cause.....poor quality control in Escort's manufacturing process (soldering). We pay $100 for Escort to do it right the 2nd time?

Poor Detection (All models). Almost guaranteed if you own an M3 for over a year. This is the $139 option since it could be anything and we have to request you do a thorough checkout of all functions. Root cause.....it's an Escort/Bel I suppose and reliability is not among your best attributes.

The $139.95 charge to fix an 8500 that costs $149.95 on the Escort e-Bay store (Refurb) takes 1st place.

It just does not seem proper that a company with so many quality control and reliability issues introduce a new multi-tiered service program seeking to profit from it.

Hmmm......how much to fix EscortLive?

Wow, i got my 8500 repaired for $79, $139 is almost double... But at least your getting some extra benefits.

Lucky for me all my Escorts have been very reliable, had my 8500 for 7 years before it needed service.

Wow man I agree 100%. At the risk of being booted from the forum I have to say those are some crappy prices. NOT what I expect from the industry leader at ALL. And I have bought a stable of Escort units over the years. Sad.

That's what happens when bean counters and management call the shots I guess.

Default Service required! for my redline

The only logical choice was to do the $140 for my 1 year and 8 month redline that has service required message. I paid $500 from the escort website. Then you found out because of poor soldering workmanship.

These repair prices are most disturbing, especially considering that the problems are mostly caused by either cheap components or poor workmanship. The last detectors we bought were two 4600 models. They came from the factory with badly scratched lenses, that I had to polish out. That is why we have bought no more since. I was thinking of buying a Passport, then I found out that it won't even come with the latest firmware. The ones we have are built well, except for the cheap lenses, and both still work.

Exclamation

Wow! I probably wouldn't have spent almost $600 ordering a Redline and Escort Live smartcord if I would have read the posts in this thread first. I thought Escort workmanship and quality was suppose to be up there at the top but it doesn't sound that way by the comments left here. I guess I will have the 30 days to make up my mind when I receive it.

Thanks for the heads up.

I will and I'm confident it will be positive results as long as I get a good (hot) one from the factory. What concerns me is the way they talk about internal parts/welds going bad a year and half after you buy it and it's out of the warranty period. Then the large repair fee. I know this is probably limited to a small percentage and is probably the norm. I just worry that with my luck, I will be one of the few. Only time will tell!

That post is more then 2 years ago....I would like to think that the quality of the redlines speaker & other stuff mentioned here are much better now.
I think its also a matter of how much you use your detectore(as any small electronic device) & at what conditions.
I'm sure the way someone is handling his detectore May also make a difference.
For example I always set my redlines volume one bar from the maximum as small parts(speaker)are more prone to damage.
Still i hope things are better now with some of the weaknesses that some detectores seems to had/have???
