Default what "authorities" use a laser?

My radar detector detected a laser saying "laser alert". I was curious what exactly are they detecting on me? I noticed the car was all tinted up and it was a mercedez benz that sneaked up behind me It's unusual to be just a regular cop. What or who could it be and what are their "lasers" used for? Are lasers to detect speed? That car sped up so fast and so close behind me to a point that I almost sped up as well to keep up but that would drive me to "speed" and things could get tricky! If that was a cop, he's probably setting me up to speed as he tail gated me with great speed! Another incident was a car was in front of me that was not a cop car but my radar detector alerted me "laser alert"! I own a Redline.

Most probably, your detector was picking up a laser signal from a collision avoidance system from that MB.

Real Laser threats from LEOs are hand-held units that the LEO holds up to their eye and "aim" at the suspected speeder.

AFAIK, there are no mobile Laser speed guns, unlike Radar speed guns.

Welcome to the world of increasingly polluted falses, thanks to the auto industry.

Police laser has to be used while stationary. Police cannot measure your speed with any laser guns while they are moving.

Even sunlight can trigger the laser detectors on your radar detector. It happens on my Max 360 from time to time. Most recently, it was late afternoon when the sun was low in the sky.

Anybody know what the typical pulse rate from laser guns is? And if it's constant, variable, or coded with anything funky (like PWM pulse trains)?
