Default Passport Coating Peeling Off

My Escort is roughly 1.5 years old. I have noticed the black coating is cracking and peeling off the case. The case is not cracked, but just the coating is peeling off. To me, this is either a design or manufacturing defect. The coating should be able to hold up to normal wear and tear in a car. Keep in mind, I take my radar detector down every day in the Summer.

In addition, the display has screen burn-in on the left side where the speed limit data is shown.

I have been a loyal fan of Passports since the 8500, which lasted me close to 10 years. I am disappointed that this version is wearing out in just 1.5 years! I will place a call to customer support to see if anything can be done without paying an expensive repair fee out of courtesy and to show good faith in customer support.

I would be interested to here if anyone else has experienced similar issues or there experiences with out of warranty repairs.

Thanks everyone and happy driving!

Mine is about the same age as yours, maybe a little older. Still looks like it came out of the box, however mine comes down once or twice a year, not everyday. I do not notice any burn in on my display either. How long is yours powered up a day on average?

What do you do for work - trying to get at what might be on your hands? It is amazing what residual chemicals can do, even sunscreen, on your hands to paint over time.

There was a batch of these from the factory that had defective paint on them. You should be able to get a new case put on your unit. I replaced one for my father recently. Good as new. It doesn't effect performance it's just cosmetic.

I would imagine your's is mounted so it is in the sun a lot. I use the visor mount on mine, rarely ever take it down. I know this mount isn't recommended, but I use mine for a different reason than most of you do. I rarely if ever speed, I use it to know if a fellow officer is nearby when in my POV. It does work pretty well with the visor mount, and it keeps it out of the sun. I have noticed it picks up a good distance away, I have to really look for the radar car.
