Exclamation Introducing SOLO S4 cordless detector

No other detector matches the portable convenience and protection of the SOLO S4. It's easy to own and operate. No more cords - just place it on the windshield or dashboard, turn it on, and you're ready to go. The SOLO S4 is ideal for the traveler who is constantly in and out of rental cars or just wants the easiest-to-use protection.

SOLO S4 packs 9-user programmable features, allowing you to customize it for your specific driving style. Your preferred settings are stored in memory, even when you replace SOLO S4's batteries. Or, simply use SOLO S4's factory settings, allowing you to just turn it on and go.

A new brilliant OLED display makes the SOLO S4 radar detector intuitive to use and easy to understand. Each signal is identified and communicated to you with clear messages. Signal strength is provided using two types of meters (programmable) which include Standard Bar-graph and ExpertMeter.

A few quick questions..

What are the main benefits of this compared to the S3? Is the main difference the updated display?

Is the performance and underlying platform the same?

What about false alert filtering? Looking through the quick reference guide, I don't see an option for TSR which really surprises me. I figured that'd be something that would be added to the S3's replacement.

Regarding the EZ-Programming mode, what makes this easier than the traditional menu setup for changing options?

If you run this detector with a power cable, is its performance the same as when running off batteries? Does performance drop as battery levels drop or is it the same all the way until the batteries die?

Thanks!

Certainly V0rtex. Here you go.

Q: What are the main benefits of this compared to the S3? Is the main difference the updated display?
A: Pretty much yes. SOLO S4 has an updated design and a new OLED display

Q: Is the performance and underlying platform the same?
A: Yes

Q: What about false alert filtering? Looking through the quick reference guide, I don't see an option for TSR which really surprises me. I figured that'd be something that would be added to the S3's replacement.
A: SOLO S4 does not have a selectable TSR option. SOLO S4 does not false to TSR as much as higher performing radar detectors

Q: Regarding the EZ-Programming mode, what makes this easier than the traditional menu setup for changing options?
A: SOLO S3 also had EZ-Programming. This has not changed between them

Q: If you run this detector with a power cable, is its performance the same as when running off batteries?
A: Performance is the same. The only difference when using a power cord is that the display will stay on all the time. Note that the power cord will not charge batteries.

Q: Does performance drop as battery levels drop or is it the same all the way until the batteries die?
A: Performance is the same until the batteries can no longer operate the unit. SOLO S4 displays battery level information during power up and when pressing the mute button with no alert present.

Thank you for answering my questions! That's all very helpful.

Very interesting.. Why is this? Would this detector still be usable in areas with traffic sensors?

I think what I'm wondering about most is the appeal of the Solo series detectors. I understand they sell quite well and the convenience is very appealing. To me it doesn't seem like a big deal to bring along a power cable and get a detector with better performance, filtering, and/or functionality such as GPS capabilities. Additionally, now that you're including a USB charger in your SmartCords (I love this, by the way), that would be helpful for traveling and rental cars so you could also power your phone while using it to run Google Maps when driving around a new city. However, it sounds like the wireless capability is desirable nonetheless and so for some the convenience factor is worth the trade-off. I'm curious to learn a little more about the mindset of the typical Solo customer and why they'd opt for a cordless detector.

So no IVT filtering? I hope it has it. I just saw it has VG-2 smartshield so i guess Virginia and Canada drivers will like that.

It is usable in areas with traffic sensors, especially when in Auto or City modes.

The SOLO line goes way back and has always been extremely popular for us. The kind of person who is going to follow radar detectors online as a hobby is probably far more concerned about detection distance and reaction speed than they are the convenience that being cordless affords them. Cordless is a must have feature for some though. Just look at what it did for the telephone industry

Great point! Remember to use this whenever you can going forward. No one can argue with it.

I was hoping for an upgrade in performance but not to be. My wife loves the darn thing and to be honest so do I. The way she and I drive it gets the job done. If you drive a 500 HP sports car and go 20 or 30 MPH over the limit this is not the detector for you.
That said I just received my new IX for when we go our road trips, and I love it also. Escort is tops with us.

Would you be so kind as to elaborate on why this detector isn't for me? I drive a high horsepower car and I have a heavy foot. Are you suggesting the detector is slower than the car? Or maybe that it doesn't pick up the radar until it's right on top of it?

The Solo 4 might very well meet your requirements, flyhigh, but it simply doesn't have the range that Escort's other detectors have, nor does it have IVT filtering to reduce false alerts from Blind-spot monitoring systems that are found on newer vehicles, and it doesn't have TrueLock (Escort's auto-learning false alert lock-out technology).

It will be "chatty" in town owing to false signals caused by motion sensors and automatic door openers, while Escort's other models will automatically learn these locations and lock them out for you.

One of its most-liked features of the Solo 4 is its size and cordless capability, and for people who travel a lot on business and rent a lot of different cars, you literally just pop the detector on the windshield and go. But there is also an optional SmartCord for it, if you'd like to use a wired to connection to save on battery drainage.

If you like, you can buy one and try it for up to 30 days. If you don't like it, you can return it to Escort for a refund (less shipping fees).
