Default False Laser Alerts? Passport 8500 X50

When driving through desolate areas, with no traffic/civilization except for fences and highway,...my Passport 8500 X50 goes off, in the laser mode. Besides scaring the hell out of me,...it is a false alarm.

On a recent trip to the Texas coast, near Victoria, it went off repeatedly as I traveled nearer to the coast. Close to the coast, it went off with annoying frequency,...out in the middle of nowhere, with no traffic around,...on a long, straight flat stretch of highway, and no LEOs.

On returning, it was the same thing, with the rate of repeated alerts diminishing as I drew farther and farther from the coast. The distance (near Austin, one way) to the coast was about 150 miles.

I did see a police car shooting radar in the K or Ka band on the way back, and the X50 worked as advertised.

Why is it going off in the Laser mode in the middle of nowhere? Also I have noticed that it alerts sometimes (in Laser mode) when I turn off the motor in my driveway, at that moment.

Any advice?

Given your observation of the detector generating a false LASER warning as you're turning off the engine, I'm betting that you have an electrical problem of some kind.

It is not at all uncommon for Escort's in-vehicle stand-alone detectors to false LASER when faced with a severe enough voltage dip or spike.

It can certainly be related to your car's charging system, but I would also not rule out your power-tap (if hardwired) or your chosen 12V accessory outlet (if using the plug-in), the latter particularly if the vehicle is aged.

I would check and double-check these concerns, first, as basic troubleshooting.

As to your coastal observation, that, I'm honestly puzzled.

Indeed, I suspect electrical noise throughout the car's electrical wiring, caused by the alternator. Radio Shack used to sell a nice and very effective RC noise filters, but they (due to the esteemed corporate minds residing in Fort Worth's Tandy Tower's) discontinued these noise filters a good while ago. Darned shame too since I bought a few of these discontinued noise filters off eBay and found them to be quite effective. Presently I have my CB, car radio, and my RD hardwire kit tied onto one of the 20 amp Radio Shack noise filters. Works like a charm.

Actually, I would like for Escort to offer a decent yet cheap noise filter for use with radar detectors, CBs, and car stereos since conventional L-C noise filters are cheap and perform quite well in comparison to IC based "intelligent" noise filters. My 20 years of very pleasant experience using conventional L-C noise filters in conjunction with car stereos and amps should be enough to back up my point.

Thanks for the replies.

My PP 8500 X50 is indeed powered through a (always hot) 12V plug-in. The vehicle is not exactly new either.

I'll look for a noise filter, on eBay or wherever, and maybe switch 12V sockets (there are three, just there).

Since it was only the Laser alert,...out in the middle of nowhere,...I was thinking I had "iron-clad evidence" for the real secret behind crop circles (i.e. satellite lasers from space!,...surveilling the Texas coast). Then again,...maybe not (Ha!)

After your comments, and after reading the threads here a bit in the interim,...at least I feel that I have some place to start from in troubleshooting the problem.

Thanks.

Don't investigate them crop circles. Rumor is that you will never be seen again!

DMN, I'd carefully clean out the 12V accessory socket, first. Simple intermittent contact, caused by the dust/debris that accumulated there over the years of harsh road-use (even if you don't smoke) could easily cause such problems.

If this doesn't correct the issue, I'd get behind that socket, and make sure the wiring leading up to it is secure. Although auto-makers have become very good at securing this socket, it's nevertheless, a part that "fights against gravity," and can well come loose over years of vibration and shock.

Be sure to first rule-out potential power-cord issues by using this unit in another vehicle, one with a verified-working-properly 12V accessory socket, as a cross-test to further troubleshoot.

Default Laser False Alerts,....

Cool,...

I'll check all of that out,...it probably is a power issue of some sort. With the repeated alerts,..it is almost a tempting measure to just unplug it.

Instead I am driving with my finger at the ready, on the mute button.

A pain in either case.

Thanks again.

Hi dmn,

Perhaps call your local Radio Shacks and see if by some miracle one of them has the 270-051 10-Amp Heavy Duty Automotive Electrical Noise Filter still in stock. That is the puppy I used in my car. I am powering my CB, radar detector hardwire kits, and my in-dash car stereo off of it. Since its rated up to 10A, this means that at 12V the thing can pass up to 120 Watts of power to whatever is hooked up to it. It has a voltage drop across it of only 0.4V at 10A.

Personally I prefer simple older style R-C noise filters compared to some of the newer IC based designs since its kinda hard for a choke and a capacitor to fail.

This is usually caused by a poor ground.

You are using a puppy as your systems filter? Hopefully “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” doesn’t catch wind of it
