You said that the system was recognized before so I doubt that this is a hardware issue with the 8500ci Plus. Your 8500ci Plus came with a data transfer USB cable, use this cable to update it. The other cables could be charging only cables which will not work. Also, try using another USB port on your computer.

After many hours of frustration and even taking my car back to Al & Ed's who installed the unit we determined that the car must be completely off for it to work. Since the Model S turns on the minute you open the door you have to go into the center touchscreen and choose the "Car off" option. You also have to be careful not to touch the brake or close or open a door as it will turn the car back on and the update will fail. Escort should be clear in their instructions that both the unit AND CAR must be powered off for the tools to see the detector and the update to run.
Finally getting around to this blog again. I'd like to try that solution but I can't because the Mac version of the Detector Tools software is way out of date. Detector tools only works with OS X up to 10.8 Mountain Lion (Escort is now three OSX versions behind). I have OS X 10.10.4, Yosemite. So what am I supposed to do, reinstall the old software just to get the friggin thing to work? I haven't been able to do a single update since I bought the device almost three years ago. Escort, please stay up to date with OS X software! Most vendors seem to be able to do that simple task. Why not you?

On my last upgrade attempt, a few hours ago, Detector Tools recognized the unit but then issued an error message that it could not communicate with it. I'm assuming this is either a problem with the out-of-date OS X versions or the vehicle power. I'm going to try yet again with all of the vehicle power off hoping that OS X won't be a problem. But given my experience (probably my 30th attempt) with this software I have very little hope. My Detector Tools subscription has proven to be a complete waste of money, and judging from many posts on this blog that seems to be the case for quite a few more buyers.

Just tried with the car powered off. No dice. But when I turned the detector on it was recognized but then the error message "Could not connect to your device: popped up again, even thought the main DT screen was showing a connection. Here are a few screen shots of what I was seeing. This could be the OS X version but then again with this software who knows? It's certainly not the USB as the moderator has insinuated.

I've wasted so much of my valuable time on this I'm so frustrated I'm inclined to pull the 8500 out and take a hammer to it.

Update: Out of frustration I called Escortís customer service tech support this morning. Talked to Heather. I should have done this long ago and now as a result I think a solution may be forthcoming. Heather spoke to an engineer whoís investigating my problems. Heather was outstanding, and I learned a few things.

First, Mac OSX version 10.10.4 Yosemite will work fine with Detector Tools.

Second, it appears when Detector Tools connects to the 8500ci itís not making a successful connection to the Detector Tools server database, which explains why my serial number is not displayed (redded out with Xís) and why no downloads occur.

The engineer also thinks its strange that Detector Tools only recognizes the 8500ci when itís powered up but not when it has no power, which is the opposite of whatís supposed to happen.

Long story short is that Heather and/or the engineer will get back to me when they have some solutions to suggest.

This is outstanding customer service and Iím grateful for it. Lesson learned is that I should not have relied on blog posts for solutions. Looking forward I will not post on the blog again except to report solutions that are recommended by the engineer working on my issues.

My computer recognizes the device fine but does not transfer the data. How does it recognize the device if my USB cable is a charging cable?

Default USB 2.0 vs 3.0 cable

I have not been able to update using detector tools and get the exact same messages. If the USB mini cable is 3.0, does that allow data to move too fast to the unit that it can't communicate? My installer has replaced the cable 4 times and we still can't get the unit to be recognized through detector tools.

Default Detecto Tools buggy

I had to connect, close out of DT, restart DT, connect again, repeat. On the third time it finally read the firmware version. It read 60% on first try then said it couldn't read firmware version, second time it went to 80%, and then 100% on third. All three times it showed the 8500ci Plus with correct serial number. When I went to Update all under the advanced tab, initially it said no updates available. Then I went to merge database and it updated to 7/8/2019. I then tried to change the preferences and it said I had to power up the unit. Tried a couple of more timed and it then let me change them. (didn't turn vehicle on for any of this)

I also have a 9500 windshield detector which only updates when power cord is plugged in, but even it took two tries. I have to believe the software is buggy. The cable is the one that came with the 9500, I have two others but they must only be charging cables.
