Default Warning! Stereo earphones can damage your Redline

My girlfriend just bought a Redline and tried to use it with stereo earphones on her motorcycle. The result? Brand new gadget now has no audio from either the speaker or the jack.

Escort tech support emailed that the jack requires a mono headset, and that a stereo headset can damage the audio circuit. They suggested we use an Escort-branded mono earphone.

But the word "mono" doesn't appear anywhere in the owner's manual. It says the device accepts a "standard" 3.5mm earphone. (I have a dozen sets of stereo earphones at home, nothing mono. And my local Radio Shack doesn't stock a mono one). Nor is there a warning in the manual that stereo earphones can damage the unit. The list of accessories in the manual does not include a mono earphone.

Same story on the website product specs: no mention of "mono" and no warning about stereo earphones.

Sooooo....I'm not sure how this could have been avoided. Seems to me the product documentation is missing some important information and warnings. Thought I'd pass the info along here, as I didn't see anything on this topic when searching the forums, either.

Still waiting to hear from Escort about next steps. Hoping that what appears to be excellent customer service based on this forum will result in a replacement without further cost. Perhaps this feedback will be valuable so they can update the manual.

I'm a longtime Valentine user (the headset jack is external, but stereo!) and am impressed with the Redline and 9500...hope to buy another Escort in the near future....

That's odd I haven't heard of stereo headsets damaging our detectors. I will look more into this. The jack is really for our auxillary speaker.

It's good to hear that you are enjoying the RedLine other than this issue.

Did she plug the Redline into a motorcycle audio system? If so then this is the cause of the audio amp failure.

No, just a standard stereo headset like one would use with an iPod. Not a powered device.

Here's the email from Escort tech support, which does mention powered devices...but that's not what she used.

Are you using our Escort headphone? You can connect an externally powered audio device as long as it utilized a MONO male connection. Attaching a STEREO connection can damage the detector’s audio circuit as it is built only for MONO output.

You will need to either use the Escort Earphone (https://www.escortradar.com/store/earphone.html) or use the Escort Ground Loop Isolator and then connect that to your audio device. (https://www.escortradar.com/store/mo...e-adapter.html)
Using the Motorcycle Adapter/Ground Loop isolator between the two connections will fix this problem for future use.

However, we haven't received a response yet to a couple emails following up about next steps. Given the audio is completely dead (speaker too), it's pretty much not usable anymore. Sitting on the table while we learn what to do next.....warranty claim?

I am most interested in what Escort finds out about this issue!. I have been considering plugging my 9500ix into my Ford Sync system. I have not done so as of yet. The jacks will fit between both systems.

I found that using a stereo earphone plug can indeed short out the audio circuit on our detectors. The RedLine manual should say "mono earphone" as the 9500ix manual says, but it does not.

We will certainly repair your RedLine under warranty as long as you didn't purchase it from an unauthorized reseller. For the quickest service, please call us to set up servicing your RedLine. The number is in my signature below.

You can currently safely use stereo headphones with our detectors by using our Motorcycle Adapater. Note that it will NOT channel the mono signal through both right and left earphones. I previously stated that it would which is not correct. My apologies for the incorrect information.

We bought directly from Escort. I'll have her call to proceed. Given there's an important omission in the manual we're hoping to avoid further shipping costs in either direction, but will discuss this with the phone rep.

Thanks for following up. Can you PM me with your name so we can reference your feedback when we call?

We already purchased the motorcycle adapter to prevent this next time.

Got my Redline back from Escort for repair, like new again.

Can Escort confirm that it's safe to use stereo headphones if I use the Escort ground-loop isolator in between? Don't want to break it again!

edit: Nevermind, I see this is confirmed above. I'm gonna give it a whirl and hope for the best!
edit2: Tried it, works okay. Only routes sound into one ear, but didn't damage anything.

Thanks. I confirmed this to be true also. I apologize for telling you before that it would split the sound into both ears. Yours is working properly.
