Default 9500ix wont connect to updating software

Hey everyone! I'm new to this fourm and own the 9500ix. Owned it now roughly 1-1.5 years so I'm not sure if that's considered old or new. I was driving the other day and the radar detector said "powering off. Update now." So, i register the radar with escort and download Escort Detector Tools and open the program. but before doing so, i connected the radar to the laptop and powered it on. all it said was usb. But when i opened the program it said "No Detector Connected." yet its definitely plugged in. Sorry for the essay but any help would be awesome !

Thinking you probably are using the wrong type of USB cable. Not all USB cables are data cables. You need to use a USB A to mini B data cable, not a charge only cable.

I assume you bought it new, if so the post above should address the issue.
If you bought it used and if its an older unit it may require 12 volt power to update in addition to the USB. If its serial # begins with 19*** it needs 12 volts, any other serial # doesn't require (or allow) 12 volts for updating.

Only old 9500ix detectors with serial numbers 19xxxxxx require 12VDC power to be connected when updating via USB.

Do NOT plug serial numbers 22xxxxxx, 33xxxxxx and later (if any) into 12 volt power when updating.

My 9500ix (Serial 22xxxxxx) was purchased new in 2010 and only needs to plugged in with a USB cable.

where do I get the 12v power from if I update in my house? or will a laptop work in the car? is there a special cigarette inter adapter I need or can I use the one that came with the RD? I never updated it for many years but it still works. will an update be worth it at this point? thanks

As flylow7f39 indicated do not use 12v unless your serial # begins with 19** (in which case you must use 12 volts in addition to usb). If you need 12v, you can either use an adapter (sold by ESCORT & others) or you can use a wifi connected laptop in your car.

The only recent updates for the 9500ix are the Defender Database cameras for which you need a paid subscription. There have been no software updates for many years and I would not recommend trying a software update unless your 9500ix is malfunctioning, which you indicated it is not.

Unless you need an updated camera database on your detector I'd leave it alone, especially if you use Escort Live.

It's been years since there was a firmware update for the 9500ix.

Escort sells one, link to 12 Volt Power Adapter. I use one sold by Garmin when I want to power up my detectors in the house. As long as you can access the Internet, WiFi or long Ethernet cable, in your car you can use a laptop. You use the SmartCord (power cord) that powers your detector and a USB A to mini B data cable, not a charge only cable.

Only old 9500ix detectors with serial numbers 19xxxxxx require 12VDC power to be connected when updating via USB.
